“The Shepherd King”
1 Samuel 16:1-13; Isaiah 53:2-3; 1 Corinthians 1:26-31
– Walter Ballou, Student Pastor
Our world is not currently a place of peace. Even our homes and our hearts are sometimes better described as places of chaos and stress. The world is in need of a righteous King to bring the promised “peace on earth.” At Christmas we celebrate the fact that Jesus is our Prince of Peace. Samuel was faced with the daunting task of finding a new king after the Lord had rejected Saul as king.
Read 1 Samuel 16:1-13
How many candidates for king did the Lord reject from Jesse’s sons before David was brought in? What qualities did Samuel see in them that would make them good choices? What was God looking for?
Read the prophecy about the Messiah in Isaiah 53: 2-3. In what ways was Jesus also an unlikely king?
Read 1 Corinthians 1:26-31
Take some time to consider your calling as a servant of God. When you consider that God chooses the weak, the insignificant, and despised to carry out His purposes, who do you need to tell about this Prince of Peace today? How can we who know Him keep from boasting about Him to a lost world? We don’t have to wait to be qualified. Praise the Lord! He can use even us!
