There are so many things happening across Green Acres right now that are worth celebrating. While these ministries may look different, they share the same purpose: helping people connect to Jesus, grow in the likeness of Jesus, and multiply for the purpose of Jesus.

I want to shine a light on three of them.

We Need Someone to Walk With Us

When I look back over my life, I can clearly see the people God used to help shape me into the follower of Jesus, husband, father, and pastor I am today.

My discipleship began at home. I owe so much to my parents, who raised me in God’s Word and showed me what it looked like to love Jesus and faithfully serve His church. Long before I understood the word discipleship, I was experiencing it.

But God also placed men in my life at different seasons who invested in me personally. Charlie Harrisberger taught me how to serve the church and how to be a young married man in ministry. Ken Baldwin taught me how to evangelize and become a disciple maker. Walter Ballou invested in me and taught me how to lead in student ministry. And there have been many other men along the way who have encouraged me, challenged me, and modeled what it looks like to follow Jesus. I am forever grateful for them.

That is discipleship. It is more than completing a Bible study. It is one person walking alongside another person, helping them follow Jesus.

Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He gave us a clear mission: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19, CSB). Paul later showed us what that multiplication can look like when he told Timothy, “What you have heard from me...commit to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2, CSB).

At Green Acres, we want every person who says yes to Jesus to have someone to walk with them.

That is why I am so excited about our Discipleship Guide and the opportunity for one-on-one discipleship at GABC. Right now, we have over 65 Discipleship Leaders who are ready to walk alongside someone using our six-session Discipleship Guide. The goal is not simply to work through another book. The Guide gives you a starting point for a relationship centered on God’s Word, prayer, spiritual growth, and ultimately helping you become someone who can disciple others.

Maybe you are a new believer and need someone to help you understand what it looks like to follow Jesus. This is for you.

Maybe you have followed Jesus for years, but you would love to have someone intentionally pour into you. This is for you.

Maybe you are walking through a difficult season and need a mature believer to walk alongside you. This is for you.

You don’t have to grow alone.

If you are interested in being discipled, simply fill out our Discipleship Learner Form. The form helps us learn a little about you so we can intentionally match you with a Discipleship Leader who can begin walking alongside you.

Someone did that for me. My prayer is that we can do the same for you—and that one day, you will do the same for someone else.

Women’s Ministry: Fall Friendship Dinner

September has been an exciting month for our Women’s Ministry as women across Green Acres have gathered for the annual Fall Friendship Dinner. This special evening is an opportunity to enjoy a meal together, hear from a guest speaker, partner with local mission organizations, and—most importantly—build relationships and take meaningful next steps in their faith.

Another important purpose of Fall Friendship Dinner is to launch the many enrichment opportunities available to women this fall, especially Bible Study. Beginning September 22, women can choose from eight different Bible study classes designed to help them grow in God’s Word and in community with one another.

At our Tyler Campus, 1,053 women registered for Fall Friendship Dinner, with 133 men serving throughout the evening. But the numbers I love most are the next steps: 45 women signed up for a Bible study, and six expressed interest in Flourish, our women’s mentoring ministry.

And there was another very special moment from the Tyler dinner. Debbie shared that one young woman sensed God calling her into ministry that evening. Debbie will be meeting with her soon to encourage her and help her begin discerning what that next step might look like. I love that! You never know how God might use one evening to impact the direction of someone’s life.

Our Español Campus also had a wonderful night, with 108 registrations and many women asking for prayer. What an incredible opportunity to come alongside women, hear what is happening in their lives, and point them to Jesus.

And our Flint Campus is continuing the celebration, with 85 women registered and 23 men serving.

I’m so thankful for Debbie Stuart and our entire Women’s Ministry team, along with the many volunteers who make these nights possible. Fall Friendship Dinner reminds us that sometimes a meal and a seat around a table can be the beginning of a new friendship, a deeper walk with Jesus, a call to ministry, or a meaningful connection to His church.

Friends for Life: A Place to Belong

Another ministry I am incredibly excited about at Green Acres is our newly launched ministry for adults with special needs—Friends for Life.

We believe every person is created in the image of God, deeply loved by Him, and should have a place to belong and grow in the local church. Friends for Life provides a welcoming, Christ-centered community where adults with special needs can build friendships, learn God’s Word, and experience the love of Jesus and His church.

Friends for Life meets every Sunday at 9:30 AM in Worship Center, Room 150-A. The easiest entrance is Door #16 off Barbara Street.

I’m incredibly thankful for Tim Morgan, who leads this ministry, and for the volunteers who faithfully serve alongside him. As this ministry grows, we need more people willing to come alongside these adults, build relationships, and simply love and serve them well.

These are just three snapshots of what God is doing through the people of Green Acres. Whether it is one person sitting across the table from a Discipleship Leader, more than a thousand women gathering for dinner, or an adult with special needs finding a community where they belong, ministry is ultimately about people.

My prayer is that we will continue to be a church where people are known, loved, discipled, and given the opportunity to use their gifts to serve others.

There is a place for you in that mission.
