Grace That Cancels, Not Just Reduces | Tuesday

Most of us have been conditioned to think that when we do something wrong, we owe something in  return. We expect consequences. We brace for punishment. And so when we finally come to God with  our sin, we often come expecting a reduced sentence at best.

But that is not how God works

When David confessed, God did not hand Him a lighter penalty. He cancelled it completely. The  Hebrew word used to describe how God covered David's sin is the same word used when the Red Sea  swallowed Pharaoh's army. Total. Overwhelming. Final. That is not a reduced sentence. That is grace. 

This is the kind of forgiveness that is hard for us to fully receive, because we are so used to earning  our way. We think we need to feel bad enough, long enough, before we deserve relief. But forgiveness  is not a reward for how much you have suffered. It is a gift freely given by a God who loves you  completely.

If you have confessed your sin to God, you are not on probation. You are not on thin ice. You are  forgiven. Fully. Finally. And that is worth letting yourself actually believe today.

In what ways have you been treating God's forgiveness as something you need to earn rather than  something He has already freely given you?

Prayer

Father, help me truly receive what You have already given. Remind me today that Your forgiveness is  complete, and that I don't have to keep paying for what You have already cancelled. Amen.
