The Cost of Hesitation | Wednesday

Devotional
Jesus encountered three people who wanted to follow Him, but each had something they weren't quite ready to surrender. One needed to bury his father first. Another wanted to say goodbye to his family. These weren't unreasonable requests - they were actually culturally expected and morally right things to do.
But Jesus saw deeper than their words. He recognized the hesitation in their hearts, the conditions they were placing on their commitment. It wasn't really about the funeral or the farewell - it was about maintaining control, keeping their options open, holding onto familiar comforts. We all have our own versions of these excuses. 'I'll follow Jesus fully when I get my finances in order.' 'I'll surrender this area of my life after I achieve this goal.' 'I'll take that step of faith when the timing is better.' These delays might seem reasonable, but they often mask our unwillingness to trust God completely.
Jesus pressed into their specific areas of hesitation because He loved them too much to let them settle for half-hearted discipleship. He knew that what they were clinging to couldn't give them the life they were truly seeking. The very things we think we need to hold onto might be the weights dragging us down.
Discomfort and conviction aren't punishments - they're God's grace in our lives. They signal that He's calling us to something better, something that requires us to let go of lesser things to embrace His best.
Bible Verse
'As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, 'I will follow you wherever you go.' - Luke 9:57
Reflection Question
What seemingly 'good' or 'reasonable' thing might actually be keeping you from fully surrendering to Jesus' call on your life?
Quote
Jesus is pressing into every ship that they have yet to burn in their lives. Everything that is disrupting focus, everything that is disrupting from truly committing Jesus and every single one of us, we have that in our lives.
Prayer
Lord, reveal to me the areas where I'm hesitating to follow You completely. Help me see that what I'm holding onto can't compare to what You're offering. Give me courage to say yes to You without conditions. Amen.
