The Danger of Staying but Never Arriving | Thursday

Devotional
The older son is the part of the story we do not talk about enough, and he might be the most relatable character in it.
He never left. He worked hard, followed the rules, and did everything right. But when his brother came home and the celebration started, something ugly surfaced. Resentment. Entitlement. A running list of everything he had sacrificed and a deep belief that he deserved more because of it.
Here is the hard truth. You can be physically present with God and emotionally miles away. You can serve in the church, read your Bible, and show up every Sunday while your heart is quietly keeping score. That is not relationship. That is a transaction.
Self-righteousness is a subtle form of lostness because it does not feel like lostness. It feels like faithfulness. But a heart that believes it has earned God's favor is a heart that does not fully understand grace.
The Father went out to the older son too. He did not ignore him or shame him. He gently called him back. That is the kind of Father we have. He pursues the rebellious and the religious alike, because both need the same thing: not a reward, but a Savior.
The only thing we bring to the table with God is our need. And that is enough.
Bible Verse
"There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God." - Romans 3:10-11
Reflection Question
Is there any area of your faith where you have been keeping score with God, believing that your obedience earns you something extra from Him?
Quote
One was lost in self indulgence, the other was lost in self righteousness and entitlement.
Prayer
Father, expose any pride or entitlement hiding in our hearts. Remind us that grace is not a reward for good behavior but a gift freely given, and help us to receive it with humility. Amen.
