The Furnace Is Not Abandonment | Thursday

When life gets hard, our first instinct is often to wonder if God has forgotten us. The silence feels heavy. The pain feels personal. And somewhere in the back of our minds, a question forms: Where are You, God?

But trouble is not evidence of God's absence. It is often evidence of His nearness.

God used the Babylonian captivity not to punish His people out of anger, but to refine them out of love. He was not far away while they suffered. He was closer than ever, working through the difficulty to shape them into a people who would trust Him alone.

The same is true for you. The furnace of affliction is not a sign that God has walked away. It is a sign that He is doing something in you that could not happen any other way. Gold does not become pure without heat. Faith does not become strong without testing.

God is closer to you right now than your next thought. He is not watching from a distance, hoping things work out. He is carrying you. Through the good times and the hard ones, in seasons of fullness and seasons of emptiness, He has not let go.

When trouble comes, resist the urge to ask God why. Instead, stand in awe of what He is doing.

Reflection Question

Think of a difficult season you have been through. Looking back, can you see any ways that God was refining or shaping you through that experience, even if it did not feel like it at the time?

Prayer

Father, when I am in the fire, remind me that You are with me. Help me to trust that Your refining work is an act of love, not abandonment. Amen.
