The Quiet Tyrant Within | Wednesday

If we are honest, the biggest obstacle to a life surrendered to Christ is not usually found in our circumstances. It lives much closer to home. Every morning, we wake up with a powerful competing voice inside us, and that voice is self. It wants the best seat. It calculates what it will get in return. It builds a kingdom with itself at the center.

In Luke 14, Jesus watched the Pharisees do exactly this. They chose places of honor, invited guests who could repay them, and used a hurting man as a theological test case rather than seeing him as a person worth loving. Pride was not just a character flaw for them. It was the organizing principle of their lives.

Pride does not always look arrogant. Sometimes it looks like self-protection. Sometimes it looks like busyness. But at its core, pride is the insistence on remaining at the center of your own story.

The good news is that Christ modeled the alternative. He moved toward people who had nothing to offer Him, including you and me. That same grace that reached you is the grace that empowers you to reach others. You do not have to conquer self on your own. Surrender is the starting point.

In what area of your life is self most loudly competing for the throne, and what would it look like to surrender that specific area to Christ today?

You and I wake up every morning with a tyrant on the throne. That tyrant is me. That tyrant is you. It's self. Self is always competing for the throne of your heart.

Prayer

Father, I acknowledge that I too often place myself at the center. Dethrone my pride and replace it with a heart that looks like Yours. Amen.
