Devotional

There is a subtle lie that creeps into the heart of anyone who has been walking with God for a while. It whispers that you are not like other people. That your sin is smaller, more manageable, more forgivable. That the person who really messed up their life needs a miracle, but you just need a little help.

Jonah believed this lie. So did the older brother in Luke 15. He stood outside the celebration and said, "I have been here the whole time. I never disobeyed you." He had reduced his relationship with his Father to a transaction, and it had made Him bitter.

But here is the truth that levels every one of us. We are all dead in our sin. Not struggling. Not wounded. Dead. There is no ranking system. There is no category of people who needed less saving than others.

Psalm 51 is David's raw, honest prayer after one of the worst failures of his life. He does not negotiate with God or compare Himself to others. He simply comes broken and asks for mercy. And God meets Him there.

That same mercy is available to you today. Not because of what you have done, but because of who God is.

In what area of your life have you been quietly comparing your sin to someone else's, and how has that comparison affected the way you relate to God?

You and I don't have varying levels of sin. You and I are all dead in our sin. Every single one of us. Therefore, we are all desperate for the grace of God.

Prayer

God, I confess that I have minimized my own need for You. Strip away my pride today and remind me that Your mercy is the only reason I am standing. I receive it with a grateful heart.
