When You Hit the Bottom | Wednesday

Devotional

The younger son did not come to his senses on a good day. He came to his senses in a pigpen, hungry, broke, and out of options. It was not a moment of spiritual discipline. It was desperation.

And yet, that moment of desperation was exactly where grace found him.

There is something important here. Hitting the bottom is not a sign that God has abandoned you. Sometimes it is the very place where He gets your full attention. When every distraction is stripped away and every backup plan has failed, you are finally in a position to hear what He has been saying all along.

This is not a comfortable truth, but it is a hopeful one. Your hardest season does not have to be wasted. Every moment of devastation carries two possibilities: your heart can grow harder, or it can grow softer. The difference is often whether you turn toward God or away from Him in the middle of the pain.

You do not have to wait until you have it all figured out to come back to the Father. You do not have to clean yourself up first. The pigpen is a perfectly valid starting point. In fact, for many of us, it is exactly where the journey home begins.

Bible Verse

"Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions." - Psalm 51:1

Reflection Question

Think about a difficult season in your life. Looking back, can you see how God was using that moment to draw you closer to Himself rather than push you away?

Quote

It is at the end of yourself that God in His grace awakens you to understand you can do nothing apart from Christ.

Prayer

God, thank You that You meet us in our lowest moments and not just our best ones. Soften our hearts in the hard seasons and help us to turn toward You when everything in us wants to run. Amen.
